    Background

Joe has a background in experimental physics and has worked in several different labs designing and building instrumentation for atomic physics, cosmology, and biophysics applications. A tinkerer at heart, they were initially drawn to neuroscience by the prospect of building gadgets for reverse-engineering the brain. After working for a year with Winfried Denk on whole-brain EM connectomics, they decided to do their graduate work in a neuroscience lab and joined the Fee lab in 2018. Since then, Joe has developed miniaturized endoscopes for large-scale neural recording and is currently using them to conduct neural feedback experiments in the anterior forebrain pathway of singing birds.
